Addictive disorders create a tremendous societal and financial burden and impact approximately 29.5 million people globally (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 2017). Substantial progress has been made, over the past few decades, in our understanding of how addictive disorders develop, are maintained, and ultimately how they are best treated. Sophisticated methodologies have been developed and refined to discover the neural, genetic, behavioral, and sociocultural correlates of addictive processes, which have important implications for the prevention and treatment of addictive disorders. Much of this progress is the result of translational work spanning from bench to bedside. We are now on the brink of narrowing yet another translational gap—the gap between human laboratory models and real-world human behavior. Some have argued that observation of actual behavior is missing from most neuroscience and psychological research (Baumeister, Vohs, & Funder, 2007; Berkman & Lieberman, 2011); however, rapid advances in technology currently allow for direct monitoring of behavior as it is occurring in daily life, with enormous potential for application in the study and treatment of addictive disorders.
