Male guppies, P. reticulata, court females at the rate of 7-13 displays/5 min on the average, yet female responses to these displays are seldom if ever observed. Females tended to respond to the displays of a new male within 30 min of his introduction to a laboratory population. Females responded to a 2nd male added to a 1-male, 2-female population if its coloration was different from the first, but responses were rare if coloration was similar. Breeding experiments suggested that rare males were significantly more successful in mating than were common ones. Female preference for rare or novel males may be partially responsible for the evolution and maintenance of the extreme polymorphism in male secondary sexual coloration observed in nature.
