Because short ears and aberrant formations of the xiphisternum, termed "bifurcated," always occur together in segregating generations of crosses with a normal-eared, normal xiphoid stock, and because the "short-ear" gene is known to cause other developmental abnormalities of the skull and body, it is concluded that bifurcated xiphisternum is another effect of the "short-ear" gene in Mus musculus.
