Alloimmune serum can selectively suppress humoral and cell-mediated immunity towards the histocompatibility antigens of inbred rats. In the case of renal allograft enhancement, the suppression induced by one injection of alloimmune serum often lasts for the life of the adult rat and displays striking immunological specificity (1,2). Due in part to the variability in biological effects of various pools of alloimmune serum, much controversy currently exists regarding the immunoglobulin class, alloantigen specificity and idiotypic repertoire of those alloantibodies which are presumed responsible for the suppressive effects of an effective alloantiserum (3,4). Hybridoma technology offers an unique opportunity to dissect the component imnunoglobulins of an immunized individual and study the biological effects of these hybridoma antibodies.
