The paper deals with the problem of production of paraphrases, or (quasi-) synonymous sentences, within the Meaning-Text Theory. It presents the ex isting Meaning-Text paraphrasing system, a set of equivalence rules operating at the level of Deep-Syntactic Represenations of sentences. A new type of paraphrasing rules is proposed, namely, semantic equivalence rules, operating at the level of Semantic Represenations of sentences, needed in order to treat a subset of theoretically interesting approximate paraphrases, whose equivalence cannot be stated by sufficiently natural and elegant Deep-Syntactic paraphras ing rules
