There is no doubt that we are living in a time oficonography. Pictures and images surround us frombirth until death. Throughout our whole lives (andeven before birth and after death), we are the productand the producer of a pure flood of images, whichdetermine our thinking, wishes and imagination. Theomnipresence of images is the result of a fundamentalshift during modernity in both the status and modal-ities of presentation procedures. The concomitantincrease in technical methods for image productionresulted in a new kind of knowledge formationcompared to premodern times. It is a specific elementof these modern and postmodern processes ofknowledge formation and dissemination that knowl-edge itself seems to be more dependent on thepossibilities of its illustration, demonstration andpresentation than on the matter or cause itself.Nevertheless, regarding the ‘‘claim for truth’’, thispractice is not less unproblematic than knowl-edge that comes along without any form of repre-sentation.
