The recent demonstration of apparent type 0 resetting by light in humans (Czeisler et al., 1989) has provoked a surprising controversy over the interpretation of the data (Beersma and Daan, this issue). It is surprising because the data seem to indicate that the human circadian oscillator behaves as predicted by theories that successfully describe the oscillators in several other species. One would have expected this demonstration to be immediately acceptable, on the grounds that it is consistent with what we know about circadian oscillators in other organisms. Why, then, this resistance to bringing humans into the circadian family? The difficulty arises from the unconventional multiple-pulse protocol used by Czeisler et al. (1989).
