Along with archaeology and genealogy, Foucault brought in the term ‘problematization’ in order to show his works as genealogies of particular problems. With regard to sexuality, this meant writing the genealogy of the hermeneutical subject of desire extending back to antiquity; that is, studying how sexuality could assume the form of the individual’s particular truth about himself. However, as diagnostician of the present, Foucault was not interested solely in the constitutional conditions of the modern subject of desire, but also in the attempt at transgressing it. His late journey into antiquity originating in the contemporary problem posed by the interlinking of sexuality and truth was the attempt to create a new horizon of experience. For Foucault, writing the history of a problematization did not mean drafting a ‘history of solutions’ (FR 343), but rather, revealing the possibilities for its future transformation.
