The problem of selection with an eye to increased milk production in dairy cattle is a complicated one since there is no male phenotypic factor on which to base selection. Progeny testing is widely used but is liable to some errors if such factors as management, age, etc., are not taken into consideration. This paper discusses various methods of estimating the rate of genetic gain and presents a theoretical method of estimation of the max. possible genetic gain of milk yield under direct selection in a closed herd. The max. possible gain is approx. 1% of the avg. yield.
