The historic trauma of boarding schools and similar efforts to eradicate Native culture and identity had a profound effect on tribal family and community life. One result is that American Indian/Alaska Native families have largely been excluded from the child development research enterprise of the past 60 years. Creating a tribal applied developmental science has promise for advancing studies of American Indian/Alaska Native child development. Realizing the promise will depend on the extent to which investigators use community-based participatory research strategies, embrace diversity in world views, emphasize cocreation of research designs and programs, and promote identity development through restoration and preservation of tribal culture and language.
