My theme is a simple one. It has four main strands. First, the community is seeking and expecting an increasingly higher standard of design within the built environment, whilst at the same time, standards appear to be falling in many significant ways. Second, our educational efforts and our educational resources are ill-equipped to produce designers who can meet the community's expectations. Third, we consequently need a new approach-one which is based on a more relevant and appropriate view of urban design as a discipline and, more particularly, as a mode of thinking amongst url:-an decisionmakers.
