The Menisci were removed from knees of 70 autopsy subjects less than 55 yr old, and 18.6% exhibited at least 1 horizontal cleavage lesion; 7% of 200 autopsy subjects showed at least 1 discoid lateral meniscus. It is suggested that neither these nor horizontal cleavage lesions had caused symptoms during each subject''s lifetime. Microscopic signs of degeneration were seen in 76% of grossly normal medial menisci examined. Medial menisci have a larger surface area than lateral menisci and are broader and thicker posteriorly. The greater thickness of the medial meniscus posteriorly may render it more vulnerable because there is less nutritional diffusion of synovial fluid.
