The X-ray microbeam diffraction technique was used as a method of local stress strain analysis in order to investigate the problem of cleavage crack nucleation from the tip of a sharp notch at low temperatures and the problem of fatigue crack propagation. The materials employed in this study are two plain carbon steels with carbon contents of 0.03 and 0.31%. The results of stress strain measurement by X-rays were discussed in comparison with the recent results of fracture mechanics.
