The visual sensations produced in man by alternating and direct currents and by the electromagnetic field were studied. The effects were obtained only when the eye itself, not the occipital cortex, was stimulated. The action of the magnetic field seems essentially the same as the currents; both are maximal in the periphery of the visual field, colorless (at low intensities), abolished by pressure on the eyeball, subject to fatigue, induced by frequencies up to at least 90 c.p.s., and prolonged by moving the eyeball. There is only one difference, namely, shutting the eye raises the threshold for electric but not magnetic stimulation. The locus of excitation appears to be within the retina.
