Basal ganglia disorders affect the motor system (" extrapyramidal system"-a rather debatable term) and give rise to a variety of motor disturbances. Absence or poverty of movements (akinesia) as well as excessive involuntary movements (choreic, athetotic, dystonic, ballistic) dominate the clinical picture. The muscle tone may decrease (hypotonia), increase (rigidity) or lead to bizarre distortions (dystonia).Stress and nervous tension, which may attend the EEG examination, can be expected to worsen both the motor deficits and the abnormal movements. There is general agreement that these involuntary movements are abolished during sleep. This removal of a constant source of EEG artifact during sleep suggests that, in these patients, sleep recordings may be more likely to provide a clearer assessment of the EEG and may result in additional information concerning these disorders.
