Multiple sclerosis has been clinically recognized for more than a century, but its etiology is still unclear. An increasingly compelling, albeit indirect, case can be made for an autoimmune/viral process in which humoral and cellular responses are directed against both myelin components and normal immunoregulatory effector cells, such as the suppressor T lymphocytes.
