Various Bacteria can use a remarkable diversity of terminal electron acceptors for respiratory energy conservation, including halogenated organic compounds (HOCs). This process, called organohalide respiration (OHR), most commonly occurs by the reductive dehalogenation reaction: RX+ H2→ RH+ HX, where X is the halide. Organohalide respiration plays important roles in determining the fates of HOCs in the environment, particularly for solvents like tetrachloroethene(PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE), which form dense non-aqueous phase liquids that can migrate down through the soil and groundwater to bedrock where conditions are usually anaerobic.
