Presents a conceptual framework for the interactive process that occurs between physicians and their pediatric patients. A theoretical and empirical analysis of pediatric medical encounters is presented and ways in which effective physician communication can be taught are offered. The following topics are addressed: theories of communication (social learning, locus of control, attribution, health belief model), systems for analyzing medical interviews, children's concepts of health and disease, communication in the office (well-child visits, illness visits), process–outcome relationships, communication with hospitalized children (including cancer patients), and teaching interviewing.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
