A principal difference between the interaction of cationic and anionic surfactants with polyglycol ethers has been found from measurements of surface tension, conductivity, dye solubilization, and the effects of change in pH of the media. Due to this experimental background, the following hypothesis of interaction between ionic surfactants and polygylcol ethers in water is stated. In water, only weak reversible hydrophobic bonding between cationic surfactants and polyglycol ethers is formed, increasing with hydrophobic character of the hydrophobic surfactant group and a decrease in temperature. Unlike cationic surfactants, complexing of anionic surfactants with polyglycol ethers is very marked. Here, besides hydrophobic bonding, electrical forces seem to be very important. The interactions are probably due to a partially positive charge transfer to the ether oxygen group and, consequently, an increased attraction of the hydrophilic group of the anionic surfactant.
