This article reports that arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi have significant roles in phosphorus cycles with terrestrial plants as well as determinants of plant community structure. However, it is almost impossible to identify the AM fungal species colonizing roots because of rare species-specific morphology. Recently polymerase chain reaction-denature gradient gel electrophoresis analysis has been applied to identify and characterize the species of AM fungi. Spore samples of five AM fungal species which exist in grassland were obtained from the National Institute of Livestock. Denature gradient gel electrophoresis profiles of 10 spore samples from each species were reproducible.
