In a previous paper, we reported the isolation and cha-racterization of four sapogenols, cantoniensistriol, sopho-radiol, soyasapogenols B and A from the roots of Abrus cantoniensis HANCE [1]. This communication deals with the isolation of chrysophanol (1, 8-dihydroxy-3-methyl-anthraquinone) and physcion (1, 8-dihydroxy-3-methoxy-6-methyl-anthraquinone) from the same plant [21. Hydroxyan-thraquin ones and their glycosides have previously not been isolated from any species that belongs to Abrus genus. The plant material, extraction, hydrolysis of the butanol extract and the preliminary separation of the aglycones were described in [1]. The anthraquinones were derived from the weak acidic aglycone portion extracted by dilute KOH solution. The crude acidic aglycones (1.5 g from 2kg plant material) were chromatographed on silica gel (Merck, Art. 9385) and eluted with petroleum ether and ethyl acetate (4: 6). Early fractions yielded chrysophanol and the tail fractions contained a mixture of chrysophanol and phys-cion. The latter was further separated by preparative TLC (0.25 mm Si-gel plate, developing solvent system, pet-et-her: EtOAc= 3: 7).
