those in the Yale Broadway Masters series, seem a more beneficial format. I would certainly be in favor of more compendia dealing with musical theater songs—especially in light of the dearth of published scripts, scores, and recordings of musicals prior to the 1940s. It is heartening that scholars and publishers are taking such an interest in musical theater. The publication of Hischak’s encyclopedia reflects the long fought-for recognition of musical theater as a legitimate subject of academic inquiry. As Kim Kowalke has made abundantly clear in his review of recent literature on musical theater, scholars from a variety of disciplines are engaging in bringing diverse critical methods and points of view to the study of the genre with “broader and more ‘ambitious’ historical, analytical, conceptual, critical, cultural, [and] sociological strategies and agendas” (689).
