Ethologically derived techniques were used to describe and evaluate behavioral effects of lesions in the septum, amygdala, hippocampus, and midline cortex of male rats. Responses of male rats during mating tests were classified into eleven behavioral categories and pre- and postoperative scores were compared. These comparisons reveal for some groups changes in mounting scores and altered precopulatory or 'courtship' behavior. Data on lesion induced changes are presented for each behavioral measure for frequency, per cent of total activity, total time, and time/event scores. Flow diagrams are used to depict the alterations in behavior shown by animals with limbic lesions. Utilizing information analysis techniques, an increased predictability in behavioral sequences was found for animals with hippocampal, septal, and midline cortex lesions.
