The dilator response of a conduit artery to an increase in blood flow has been proved to be caused by a local mechanism [1, 2] and not by spreading of relaxation from the pe ripheral vascular area [3]. Searching for a trigger signal of the local mechanism the en dothelial cells have been supposed to be equipped with receptors sensitive to the shear stress produced by the flow of blood [4], The purpose of this study was to examine experi mentally whether the endothelium plays such a key role in the control of arterial diameter by blood flow. The experiments were performed on 19 mongrel dogs of both sexes (body weight 10-16 kg) anesthetized with sodium thiopental (Spofa), the initial dose being 15 mg-kg-1, the supplementary doses 7 mg-kg-1-h* 1. The fe moral artery (FA) distal to the inguinal liga ment was exposed and its peripheral end was connected by a plastic tube to the contralat eral femoral vein. The FA was situated in a trough formed by the edges of the incised
