The gain of the vestibuloocular reflex (eye velocity/head velocity) was measured in cats. Its normal value in the dark was 9.9 over the frequency range 0.03-1.2 Hz. When cats wore left-right reversing prisms chronically, the gain decreased to about 0.1 in 8 days at 0.05 Hz. This may have been an adaptive change because it helped to reduce retinal image slip during head movement. This adaptive response was abolished by removal of the vestibulocerebellum, principally the flocculus and nodulus. One function of the vestibulocerebellum is apparently to detect dysmetria in the vestibuloocular reflex and repair it by a method of automatic gain control.
