Because of the interest in the use of multifilamentary superconducting Nb3Sn composites for magnets to confine magnetically the plasma in fusion reactors, fabrication techniques as well as superconducting properties of multifilamentary Nb3Sn wires have been extensively examined.1,2As pointed out earlier, the use of pure Nb3Sn wires as currently produced appears to be limited for magnetic fields of 12 T or below. However, recent designs for future Mirror3and Tokamak4types of fusion reactors call for magnets operating at magnetic fields of 12 T or higher. Thus, it is necessary to improve the current capacity of the wires to meet these future demands.
