The etiology of acute glomerulonephritis had been the subject of different opinions and theories. The name of this disease in-dicates that formerly an infective etiology has been assumed. But in most cases of acute glomerulonephritis the typical signs of acute infection are absent. There is seldom tenderness. Fever is often absent. No bacteria are found in the urine. In many cases the relations between infection elsewhere in the body and acute nephritis is peculiar. In those cases it is often seen that the nephritis starts some considerable time after the beginning of the infection, for instance an angina, otitis, skin-infection etc. The original infection has often subsided at the time of the beginning of the nephritis. In scarlet fever the nephritis mostly starts from 2 to 3 weeks after the beginning of the disease. These pecularities in the clinical picture of the acute nephritis have led to the theory that there is no real infection, but that the nephritis is caused by allergic mechanism. This theory has got a solid foundation through the experiments of Masugi (1) who was able to cause a typical nephritis by an antigen-antibody reaction. A suspension of rat-kidney was injected into rabbits and caused the appearance of antibodies against rat-kidne y in the serum of this rabbit. When this immune-serum of the rabbit was injected into another rat nephritis followed. In this manner it could be demonstrated that a mechanism closely related to allergic phenomena would cause nephritis.
