Qualitative & Multi-Method Research, Fall 2010 are trying to explain. Explanation should be the most important objective of the scholarly enterprise, not simple description of a phenomenon. Eclectic approaches, if not used carefully, can end up in thick descriptions of a mish-mash variety, a danger that scholars should try to avoid. Also, sometimes a single paradigm can explain a given phenomenon better and if so, one should be willing to accept that possibility without branding himself as a card-carrying member of a paradigm. Sil and Katzenstein offer us a coherent set of philosophical foundations and a flexible analytic framework for research that does not fit into existing paradigms. Now, it is up to other scholars to do more of the problem-focused empirical work needed to make this a core approach in the discipline.
