Outsourcing as a way of corporate organization and governance has become an important source of economic volatility. This article provides an analytical framework and theoretical hypotheses on the relationship between outsourcing and economic volatility. Using Chinese provincial panel data for the period 2000—2009, this paper reveals that the effect of outsourcing on economic volatility is significantly positive and the channels are through exports and imports. Furthermore, this paper finds that the higher the proportions of small firms, foreign-funded firms and low-tech firms, the greater the economic volatility outsourcing results. In addition, we find that outsourcing causes economic volatility primarily by increasing the volatility of production and employment in existing firms (volatility by the intensive margin), instead of by increasing the volatility of the number of firms (volatility by the extensive margin).
