THE work of the elementary school has received less critical study than almost any other phase of the American school system. The education of the very young child at one extreme and of youth at the other has been the concern of studies carried on by national groups and by regional and state associations. The "in-between" elementary school child and his program has been virtually a "no-man's land," with all too little critical examination of trends. There is real need for study of this area as an important unit in the continuous education of all citizens.
