Ventilatory ability, the diffusing capacity of the lung and O2 uptake were investigated in mice of different sizes. Breathing frequency decreased with body wt although minute ventilation (.ovrhdot.V) increased (.ovrhdot.V .varies. W1.729). Weight-specific diffusing capacity for CO showed little variation with size. O2 consumption (.ovrhdot.VO2] rose with weight according to .ovrhdot.VO2 .varies. W0.41. In older, larger mice this resulted in increased ventilatory requirements (.ovrhdot.V/.ovrhdot.VO2).
