Mice were rewarded for lever-pressing by the presentation of a luminous pattern. For the patterns used (circle, square, X) the rate of response was related to the complexity of pattern. A group whose reward-pattern shifted among the 3 at the end of each minute responded at an intermediate level, making an explanation in terms of novelty difficult.
