Salts containing the fac-[B 20 H 18] 2-or the closo-[B 21 H 18]-ion are synthesized. The crystal structures of K 2 [B 20 H 18]× 4MeCN and (IV) are determined by XRD. The former compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2 1/n with Z= 4, and (IV) in the monoclinic space group C2 with Z= 4. The [B 21 H 18]-ion is the first example of a singly charged closo-borate species which contains two face-shared icosahedral entities.
