In effect, the renal cortex and medulla are supplied by separate circulations, which differ from each other in five respects: 1) The cortical circulation is a high-pressure, high-velocity system, 60 mm. Hg. at the glomerulus and 2.5 sec. circulation time through the cortical capillaries. The medullary circulation is a low-pressure, low-velocity system, 15 mm. Hg. and 50 sec. circulation tirn. e through the vasa recta.2) Ten to twenty times as much blood perfuses the cortex as the medulla and less than 2 per cent perfuses the deep medulla. 3) There probably exists a functional arteriovenous shunting mechanism in the cortex permitting large quantities of highly oxygenated post-glomerular blood to find access to the interlobular veins without traversing the peritubular capillaries. Little if any shunting occurs in the n, edulla.
