MATERIALS AND METHODSFour Rhesus monkeys were anesthesized with Fluothane, and under aseptic conditions the right facial nerve was exposed proximal to the bifurcation into the temporo-and cervicofacial divisions. At this point, utilizing the Cooper-Linde CE-2 cryosurgery unit and the PR-5 probe with a 0.5 cm probe tip, a cryolesion measuring-40 C for 2 min was created. After complete thawing, this lesion was repeated. The temperature gradient was monitored with a Beckman’microthermocouple [13] and a Honeywell Visicorder 1508B. Following the freeze, stimulation by nerve stimulator (2 mA) t proximal to the cryolesion failed to elicit facial nerve muscle function. Periodic observations of nerve function return were made and recorded by cinephotography.
