The concentrations of arsenic (As), beryllium (Be ), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn nickel (Ni ). lead ( Pb ), tin (Sn), thallium (T1 and vanadium (V) were analyzed in different classes of food items purchased in the area of Tarragona (Catalonia, Spain). A total of I I food groups were included in the study. Trace element concentrations were measured by ICP-MS. In all food groups, Be. TI, and V were under the respective detection limits. The dietary intake of the remaining elements was determined by a total diet study. Calculations were made based on previous data on the consumption of the selected food items in the area. Total daily intakes (μg) were the following: As 272.7, Cd 18.2, Cr 139.2, Hg 4.8, Mn 2 190, Ni 143.8, Pb 48.6. and Sn 63.7. These values are in the same order as most data for dietary intakes found in recent surveys from different countries. Moreover. the dictary daily intake of the toxic clements As, Cd. Hg, and Pb should not present a health hazard for the population of the Tarragona area.
