The book is described as apractical guide for careworkers' and is an excellent guide for people working in caring situations be it in a hospital setting, residential home, nursing home, day centre or in the patient's own home. It could also be used as a basis for anyone planning to train carers such as volunteers, nursing assistants, home care assistants etc. in how to communicate with people with dementia. The author aims to give the reader an understanding of normal communication, and how it might break down in elderly people and in people with dementia, and tooffer ideas that will help open good channels of communication, thereby encouraging the best possible quality of life'. This book not only fulfils these aims but does so in a clear, simple and easily digestible way. Information is presented in small chunks and in a logical progression. Core information is repeated appropriately and there is sensible cross-referencing between early information-giving chapters and later chapters where problem-solving suggestions are made. The book also describes how carers can use a questionnaire to build up a unique profile of the likes and dislikes of individuals with more severe dementia and use this to improve quality of life and to plan and review care.
