新的毒株DI.H.
These three papers all describe the isolation and characterization of a virus from the blood of a Zairian patient who became ill during a large outbreak of haemorrhagic fever in northern Zaire and southern Sudan in the second half of 1976. Material from Zaire was originally sent to Antwerp and from there specimens were dispatched to Porton Down and Atlanta. The prototype virus was isolated in guineapigs and Vero cell cultures but isolation attempts in mice were inconclusive. Guineapigs developed a febrile illness while some cytopathic effects and intracytoplasmic inclusions were detected in Vero cells. Histopathological examination of 3 post-mortem human liver specimens and livers from guineapigs inoculated with the prototype virus showed focal hepatocellular necrosis and many large eosinophilic inclusions in intact hepatocytes. Guineapig spleen and lymph nodes showed widespread depletion of lymphoid tissue. Electron microscopic studies revealed many filamentous virus particles in the liver. Similar particles were found in Vero cell cultures. Their diameter was approximately 100 nm and their length varied from 300 nm to 1500 nm, often with terminal blebs. There are several excellent electronmicrographs illustrating the authors' opinion that the particles are morphologically indistinguishable from the Marburg virus strains isolated in Germany in 1967 and South Africa in 1975. The paper by Johnsonet al., however, describes fluorescent antibody studies comparing Marburg virus with the Zaire virus. A distinct antigenic difference was detected. Bowenet al.report the isolation of 3 further virus strains from Zaire and 1 from Sudan while Johnsonet al.found that early convalescent sera from 2 patients in Sudan contained antibody to the Zaire virus but not to Marburg. The name Ebola virus has been proposed for the new strains,D. I. H. Simpson.
