Moscow ranks among the largest megacities in the world. Pollution sources located in Moscow–industrial enterprises, municipal services, motor transport and many others–exert an adverse effect on the quality of urban air and the state of regional atmosphere (Bulletin, 2008, Elansky, 2014, Elansky et al., 2015). Moscow is located in the East European Plain in the interior of the continent and at the highest latitude, when compared to other megacities. These geographic features affect the transport of pollutants and their chemical transformation.Moscow is one of the most compact megacities. In the late 1950s, the boundaries of Moscow were legislatively established and passed with slight deviations along the Moscow Automobile Ring Road (MARR) with a radius of about 17 km. Residential sector, industry, and urban infrastructure developed within these boundaries. In the neighborhood of Moscow, there was a little economic activity. In 1900, within the official boundaries Moscow had an area of 1080 km 2, its population amounted to 9.9 million people and the density of population was 9100 people per km 2.
