Significance: The authors report the first hydroxide-conducting polymer 1. This new polymer can be used in hydroxide-conducting membranes that are otherwise based on quaternary ammonium centers that are unstable in hydroxide solutions. This synthesis yields a positively charged polymer that can also endure alkaline conditions.Comment: Steric crowding at the C2 position of the benzimidazole rings helps to stabilize the poly (benzimidazole) and benzimidazolium hydroxide salt 2 towards a hydroxide attack. The polymer films were made into an insoluble hydroxide membrane by addition of excess KOH to form hydroxide-activated electrostatic interactions. Removal of K+ and OH–by washing created an insoluble stacked polymer that was used to create hydroxide-conducting membranes that had ionic conductivities of up to 13.2 mS cm–1.
