Edward Fry I would like to present a new and totally revised list of Instant Words. The old list of Instant Words has been around for over 20 years (Fry, 1957), and it has aided many class room teachers and remedial teachers by giving them a research-based list for sight word instruction. The old list has been reprinted in many teacher training textbooks, on film strips, and in countless local district curriculum guides and teacher train ing pamphlets. The older list contained the most common words in English in rough rank order based on studies by Rinsland (1945), Dolch (1936), Thorn dike and Lorge (1944), and others. The new list is based on a newer fre quency count of five million running words done by Carroll, Davies and Richman (1971). However, the Carroll, Davies, and Richman list has some flaws that make it less useful for classroom teachers than the edited list presented in this article.
