Where winds blow persistently alongshore, surface waters are forced offshore and are replaced by nutrient rich water upwelling from below. The history of this process is an indicator of global environmental change through time. The authors look at the fossil and chemical record of change in upwelling since extensive glaciation began in Miocene times. The authors focus on results from deep ocean drilling expeditions. Syntheses of these new results provide a unique opportunity to reconstruct the temporal and spatial palaeoenvironmental patterns associated with upwelling systems since the Early Miocene. These patterns should profile insights on forcing and feedback mechanisms that connect changes in climate, ocean circulation and marine productivity.
