The improved auditory experience provided by cochlear implants over hearing aids has facilitated the acquisition of spoken language in children with profound deafness from a wide range of educational settings, including both oral and total communication classrooms. For children who receive the implant early in their development (ie, below 3 years of age), the average rate of language growth is very similar to that expected of hearing children. This accelerated growth of language appears to support more normal reading acquisition as well. Future research is needed to confirm that reading growth continues at a normal rate through adolescence.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
