As an extended introduction, the consequences of a possible existence of freak waves is discussed from a risk point of view, where focus is on the risk for loss of human lives. Herein freak waves are defined as wave events which are not captured by a second order model for the surface process, which as of today is the most advanced wave model for routine engineering. Finally, a major part of the paper is devoted to a review of literature which have presented wave events which may be examples of freak wave events.
