Studies by a number of workers have shown that normal urine contains at least two inhibitors of the growth and aggregation of calcium oxalate crystals in vitro (1–5). Of these, a low molecular weight material, possibly pyrophosphate, accounts for about 10–15% of the total inhibitory activity of urine (4,5), the remaining activity being attributed to a high molecular weight component thought to be in the acid mucopolysaccharide (AMPS) fraction (4). The present paper examines the evidence that the main inhibitor of calcium oxalate crystallisation is an acid mucopolysaccharide.
