A workshop was held held at the Institute for General and Experimental Pathology, University of Innsbruck Medical School, Austria, 9-11 Sep. 1981, to compare the MHC haplotypes present in fowl flocks in Europe and North America, and to establish a uniform nomenclature for the MHC genes and their products. This summary of the workshop's main results and recommendations includes (1) designation of a standard strain of fowl as the reference source for each of 27 distinct B haplotypes, and (2) the recommendation of a uniform nomenclature for standard and recombinant haplotypes. Details are given of typing procedures, standard B haplotypes, and the nomenclature for loci, recombinants, new haplotypes, minor variants and monoclonal antibodies.
