The variations of the heart volume at rest and during muscular work have since the works of Morixz et al.(23) been studied by many investigators. For surveys of the earlier literature see McCrea, Eyster and Meek (21) and LiQestrand, Lysholm and Nylin (20), and of modern studies see Rushmer (33). In only a few of the irtvestigations have the methods allowed it computation of the heart volume. Such calculations can be performed adequately only if roentgenograms are taken simultaneously in two planes at right angles, as pointed out by Liljestrand et al.(20). The main cause of the large interest in the changes of the heart volume, during dynamic muscular work, has been the maintained discussion of the applicability of Starling’s law to explain the increased performance of the normal heart during exercise. According to, traditional concepts cardiac output during exertion is increased by increases in both heart rate and stroke volume (for ref. see Reindell
