METHODS Ten patients were studied (age 24 to 62 years) who complained of a lump in the throat without associated dysphagia, pain, hoarseness or cough. The symptom duration ranged from 12 t:) 18 months. Physical examination excluded the possibility of occult laryngeal, esophageal or neck disease. Additionally, a cineesophagogram failed to demonstrate either narrowing or slowing of the barium flow, enlarged cervical osteophytes or hypopharyngeal diverticuli.
