The etiologic agent of rickettsialpox isolated from a wild Korean rodent was identified by cross-immunity tests in mice and guinea pigs and by complement-fixation tests employing type-specific washed rickettsial antigens and group specific soluble antigens. The disease has not yet been recognized among human inhabitants of this area. The agent was not previously known to be present in this geographic area nor to occur in rodents other than commensal mice and rats. It is suggested that the ecology of rickettsialpox includes a natural cycle independent of man or his rodent companions.
