By the control and manipulation of external acoustic stimuli (simultaneous reading, reversed speech, speech-shadowing, separation of air-conduction and bone-conduction functions, high vs. low frequency noise masking, for example) it is demonstrated with 54 stammerers that under specific conditions there occurs" an almost total inhibition of stammering behaviour." The hypothesis is developed, from the findings, that stammering is mediated by" the subject's perceptions of his own low-frequency voice sounds…. Stammering is a perceptual rather than a motor abnormality. Under control, the sufferers (can be) induced to speak and read at normal rates." An appendix, by Pauline M. Marland, summarizes clinical observations made during the course of the experimental studies.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved)
